In Romanesque architecture -and especially in Gothic architecture- the rosette played an important role. Obviously it provided illumination to the interior of the nave, it also served as illustration thanks to the motifs represented in the stained-glass windows that it held and it was also a characteristic sign of identity of the building since each one was different, especially from the 13th century when the great master builders left their mark on their works creating a school with a recognisable style.
